Mahmud, the son of Ghiyas al-Din Tughlaq II (1388-1389), was brought to the throne by the nobles in 1394. At the time of Timur's invasion (1398), Mahmud was the nominal sultan at Delhi while real power was exercised by the wazir, Mallu Iqbal Khan. Mahmud escaped to Gujarat but was recalled to Delhi by Mallu Iqbal in 1401. Accepting a pension from Mallu Iqbal Khan, Mahmud retired to Kanauj but returned to Delhi after Mallu Iqbal Khan was killed by Khizr Khan (1405), and continued to reside there as the nominal sultan until his death in 1412.
